Essay Analysis

Essay 1

Imagine yourself at the completion of your MBA journey. Why was pursuing your MBA at Texas McCombs the right decision for your personal and professional growth? Reflect on how you made the most of your time in the program—academically, through hands-on learning opportunities, and within the McCombs community. Highlight how you contributed to the McCombs community and used its resources to grow both professionally and personally.
Word Limit: 250 words

Tips:
McCombs Essay 1 is your classic career vision + "Why our school" essay — just compressed. You’ll need to be precise: nail your long-term goal, connect it to your short-term plan, and clearly explain why McCombs is the launchpad. Prioritize the school’s most distinctive offerings don’t waste space on generic features you’d find anywhere. This is also the place to highlight what draws you to Texas: maybe you’ve lived there, maybe it’s the culture, maybe it’s the people either way, make it personal. McCombs is known for its collaborative, driven vibe so show how you’ll fit into and add to that ecosystem. And if your story has a great hook, you can always save that for Essay 3 and keep this one clean and tactical.

Essay 2

Reflect on a core value that defines you. Share a specific example of how it has guided your decisions and actions, and explain how it will shape your contributions and growth as a McCombs MBA student. Highlight how this value has influenced your leadership style and life path, and how it will shape your MBA experience.

Word Limit: 250 words
Tips:
This isn’t just a prompt — it’s an invitation to let McCombs see what really drives you. Not the polished version from your resume, but the part of you shaped by late nights, bold bets, and maybe even a few setbacks. If you’ve bootstrapped your way up or been the first to break a barrier in your family, say it with clarity, not apology. Anchor your story in a value that’s personal — something that’s guided your toughest calls — and bring it to life with a sharp, honest example. But don’t stop there. Show how that same mindset will make you someone others want on their team at McCombs. Whether you’re leading a summit, mentoring peers, or building community behind the scenes, let them see the throughline from your past to the impact you’ll make on campus.

Optional Essay

Please provide any additional information that you believe is important and/or will address any areas of concern that will be beneficial to the Admissions Committee in considering your application

Word Limit: 250 words
Tips:
While I understand that certain elements of my application may raise questions, I’ve approached each of them with the same mindset I bring to work—clarity, accountability, and persistence. I’ve chosen not to request a recommendation from my direct supervisor, as they’re not supportive of my MBA plans; instead, I’ve asked a senior leader who’s closely observed my leadership, collaboration, and strategic thinking over the past two years. Regarding a dip in my undergraduate grades, I faced a steep academic transition without a strong foundation in math or science, but I chose to stay the course, ultimately earning my degree in engineering—an experience that built resilience and discipline. When a layoff affected my entire team early in my career, I used the time to reflect deeply, expand my network, and invest in personal growth—lessons that continue to serve me today. If there are concerns about my academic readiness, I hope my recent test scores, strong performance in analytical projects, and consistent drive to grow serve as proof that I’ll bring the same dedication to the MBA classroom.

My View

McCombs is the kind of place that doesn’t need to prove it’s scrappy — it just is. It’s got that roll-up-your-sleeves, build-while-you-learn energy that’s hard to fake. Walk around Austin and you’ll feel it: a city alive with startups, tech, music, and ambition and McCombs sits right in the middle of that charge. You’ll find coders pitching ideas to founders, consultants jamming with creatives, and people who dream big but keep their boots on the ground. There’s no room for pretense here — just clarity, hustle, and momentum. What I love most is how McCombs doesn’t just prepare you for the job market it throws you into it. From Texas Venture Labs to real-world consulting projects, you're constantly learning by doing. If you want a school that’s as driven, adaptive, and real as the future you’re building McCombs is already moving at your pace.

Final Take

With its flexible curriculum and deep ties to major employers across Texas and beyond, McCombs suits those who want to build meaningful careers with a focus on agility and problem-solving. However, if you're seeking a brand-name-heavy, finance-dominant East Coast experience or a hyper-competitive culture, McCombs’ collaborative, Texas-rooted, innovation-driven environment may not be the right fit.
