WHOM TO CHOOSE AS YOUR RECOMMENDER?

Million-dollar question right….

Yes, I get it is difficult to sometimes choose A over B, difficult to mention that you are applying to a B-school to your Boss & what not. So, here is my advice. (in order of priority)

1. Current direct supervisor

2. Former direct supervisor ( not more than 2 years back )

3. Some other person who supervised you in current or previous company)

4. Your mentor / Business partner

5. A client

6. Supervisor from some social work (only if it is a major part of your application)

Don’t pick

1. Your family person

2. Someone junior or someone who reports into you.

3. Vendors

4. Your peers / professors

LOR Analysis
Final Take

Darden is great for those who want a hands-on, leadership-focused MBA experience where hard work and earning your place matter more than just a name on your resume. It offers a strong community and practical tools that truly transform you. But if you’re after instant prestige or a large, flashy brand with less effort, it might not be the best fit.

Insights
  • Pick someone who knows you well, not someone with a fancy title or MBA.

  • Avoid the CEO if they can’t speak in detail about your work.

  • Don’t risk a weak or negative LOR—it can hurt your chances.

  • Never write the LOR yourself—schools can tell, and it’s risky.

  • Waive your rights to view the letter this builds trust.

  • Focus on EQ over IQ highlight leadership, initiative, and teamwork.

  • If submitting two LORs, make sure they cover different strengths or examples.

  • Ensure consistency between your LORs and application—no contradictions.

My View on Darden

Hi, I’m Nirvan, founder of Applicant X.

What I love about a well-crafted LOR is how it adds credibility to your story in a way no resume or essay ever can. It’s your proof of performance through someone else’s eyes.

Here’s what I’ve learned works best (and what I always advise my clients): help your recommender anchor their letter in real examples, keep the praise specific, and don’t shy away from honest, balanced feedback. That’s what top schools trust most.

Question 1
How would you characterize your relationship with the applicant and, if applicable, the applicant’s role in your organization?

Word Limit: 50 words

Tips:
This is a credibility question. The basic idea is to establish how well the recommender knows the applicant. However, don’t just mention it factually like I know her from the last 12 months. No, we have an opportunity to mention this answer with some anecdote. Like I know her from the last 24 months, but we have worked together for the last 12 months Since I specifically requested that she be a part of my team because of her excellent communication skills. Or you can mention why they hired you because of which quality.

Question 2
How does the performance of the applicant compare to that of other well-qualified individuals in similar roles?
Word Limit: 500 words
Tips:
Mention brand traits with examples (Examples are super important without which just words means nothing) Again Focus on EQ things not IQ. Focus on leadership qualities and not qualities like finished projects on time, met deadlines, and all this stuff. These are general stuff & speak nothing about your leadership qualities. Mention brand traits that tie into your future career vision Mention times you have led people Persuaded someone Initiated something that wasn’t part of your work detail Rapid promotions Awards And other such qualities that differentiates you from your peers. Again note that examples are to be provided for all such qualities.

Question 3
Describe the most important piece of constructive feedback you have given the applicant. Please detail the circumstances and the applicant’s response.

Word Limit: 500 words

Tips:
The answer should contain the following points 1 Weakness 2 Feedback given for that weakness 3 The applicant accepted the feedback in a constructive manner 4 The applicant took XYZ steps to improve it 5. I saw great improvement post the XYZ steps taken by the applicant. Again, mention everything with examples & only mention qualities that can be improved over time nothing that questions your integrity or anything

Question 4

Is there anything else we should know? (Optional)
Word Limit: 500 words
